7. Synthetic target images to simulate the stereo effect  

Edpiv pE 2013 simulatiom example

Step 1: Create a standard target image 

- Execute edpiv.exe to open EDPIV start window;

- Select menu “File \ New image” ;

- Input new image size as: Width=1024, Height=1024, and press “OK” button;

- Select menu “Edit \ Scale & time” to open dialogue box “Imaging scale/time interval”;

- Select radio button “mm”;

- Set field of view as: X0=0, Y0=0, X1=100, Y0=100;

- Press “OK”  button to close the dialogue box; 

- Press button “Processing” to open “Image processing” window;

- Select menu “Edit \ Test grid” to open dialogue box “Test grid” and set parameters as
Line distance: 10 [mm]
Line thickness: 0.4 [mm]
Grid lines: Selected

- Press button “New” to create a target image;

- Press button “S” and answer “Yes” to question “Do you want to keep changes for the current image?”

Step 2: Create target images with stereo effect for stereo image calibration   

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: A
Camera focus length: f=60 (A)
Objective distance: H=430 (A)
View angle: XZ=30 (A)
View angle: YZ=5 (A)
Z-displacement: 0 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_A_000.bmp;

- Press button “Reset” to show the standard target image;

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: B
Camera focus length: f=60 (B)
Objective distance: H=320 (B)
View angle: XZ=-50 (B)
View angle: YZ=-5 (B)
Z-displacement: 0 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_B_000.bmp.

Step 3: Create target images with out-off-plane shift for stereo system calibration   

- Press button “Reset” to show the standard target image;

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: A
Camera focus length: f=60 (A)
Objective distance: H=430 (A)
View angle: XZ=30 (A)
View angle: YZ=5 (A)
Z-displacement: -0.5 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_A_N50.bmp;

- Press button “Reset” to show the standard target image;

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: A

Z-displacement: 0.5 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_A_P50.bmp;

- Press button “Reset” to show the standard target image;

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: B

View angle: XZ=-50 (B)
View angle: YZ=-5 (B)
Z-displacement: -0.5 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_B_N50.bmp;

- Press button “Reset” to show the standard target image;

- Select menu “Edit \ Stereo effect \ by parameters” to open dialogue box “Stereo PIV system setup [deg, mm]”

- Set parameters as
Camera: B
Camera focus length: f=60 (B)
Objective distance: H=320 (B)
View angle: XZ=-50 (B)
View angle: YZ=-5 (B)
Z-displacement: 0.5 [mm]

- Press OK” to add the stereo effect;

- Select menu “File \ Export image” to save the distorted target image into a file, e.g. Camera_B_P50.bmp;

- Close EDPIV software.

Step 4: Determine calibration functions for the distorted stereo images

Step 5: Determine geometrical parameters of the stereo system
