When file “Edpiv.exe” is executed, the dialogue window titled “EDPIV PE 4.0”, which is referred as “start window” in the followed text, appears on the screen. A picture of the Chinese Great Wall is shown in a large frame on the left. The working status and the temporal limit are shown in the lower left corner of the start window. On the upper right, there is a rectangular area for displaying logos of universities and institutes that contribute to the development of the software. On the lower right, there are 4 function buttons. In addition, there are 14 menu choices in the start window.
Five digital images can be loaded into the workspace buffers of the software through the start window. When a PIV recording is loaded, the picture of the Great Wall will be replaced by the loaded image, and the file name will be shown in the lower left corner replacing information of working status and the temporal limit. The functions of menu choices and buttons are described as follows:
File \ Open recording 1 - Used to load the 1st image of a single exposed PIV recording pair or a double exposed PIV recording;
File \ Open recording 2 - Used to load the 2nd image of the single exposed PIV recording pair;
File \ Import mask 1 - Used to load 1st mask for a two-phase PIV recording pair;
File \ Import mask 2 - Used to load the 2nd mask for the two-phase PIV recording pair;
File \ Import B-mask - Used to load a background mask image;
File \ Image group - Used to load the file list of a PIV image group. The format of the file list is described in section “I/O files” in the help manual;
File \ New image - Used to generate a blank image with given width and height;
File \ Exit - Used to terminate the software;
Edit \ Evaluation settings - Used to open “Evaluation settings” window to set general evaluation parameters;
Edit \ Stereo system - Used to set parameters for stereo or distorted PIV system;
Edit \ Scale & time - Used to determine imaging scale and to input time interval between exposures;
Edit \ Raw images - Used to open dialogue box “Raw image format” to set parameters for reading uncompressed (raw) images;
Edit \ File list - Used to open dialogue box “Creating file list” to generate image or data file lists;
Help - Used to open the help manual.
Clear image - Used to delete current image shown in the picture frame;
Evaluation - Used to open “Evaluation” window (it does not work when “recording 1” is not loaded).
Processing - Used to open “Image processing” window;
Show Image - Used to switch images shown in the picture frame.
Image group display
When the list file of a PIV recording group is loaded, the first PIV recording pair for the single exposures or the first recording for double exposures is automatically imported. Buttons “<” and “>” and two edit box are enabled. The number of the current image is shown in the left edit box. The right edit box is the skip number for increasing or decreasing the current image number with button “<” or “>”. The image shown in the picture frame can be changed by putting a new number in the left edit box. When button “<” or “>” is pressed, the image shown in the picture frame jumps backwards or forwards with the given skip number. The current image number and the skip number are transferred to “Evaluation” window or “Image processing” window when pressing button “Evaluation” or “Processing”.
